To preview the voice and speaking rate, click on the Play button. The slider allows you to select the speaking rate that works best for you. Use the pulldown menu at the top of the Text to Speech pane to select a voice. To assign commands to keys that let you fast forward and rewind text when you use Read All, open VoiceOver Utility (press VO-F8 when VoiceOver is on), then click Commanders. Choose Apple, System Preferences, Speech. The orientation commands VO-F4-F4 and VO-F5-F5-F5 can be useful in determining the insertion point’s location in a document. To hear the first line of text in a document, press VO-Down Arrow. If you press the Down Arrow key at the first line of a document, VoiceOver won’t read the line because the insertion point has moved to the next line. ![]() When you use the Down Arrow key to move from one line of text to the next, VoiceOver speaks the line where the insertion point is located. You have to read each page individually, which is a hassle, but at least it is possible to read the text out loud using this method.VO in the chart above represents the key you defined to start VoiceOver (Click to enlarge) This allows you to select any block of text from the screen, including from the Kindle app, copies the text into a new frame and then reads the text back, highlighting each word as it is read. The best way we have found for adding Text to Speech to the Kindle app on an Apple with Mavericks is to use the Screenshot Reader in Read and Write 5 Gold. The Speak Selected Text method no longer works. Unfortunately, the Kindle App for the Mac is quite limited for people with reading difficulties - there is only one, unfriendly, font available, though text size and spacing can be varied, and there is no built-in Text to Speech facility. What can you do if the book you want is only available for the Amazon Kindle, or if you have a Kindle account and prefer to use that, rather than set up an iBooks account? There is a free Kindle app, available through the Apple App Store, which can be used to read Kindle books that have been purchased, or downloaded from the Amazon Kindle Store.
